At Decatur Plastic Surgery and Cosmetic Laser Center we are constantly evaluating and considering the latest equipment in laser technology.
I personally have a great interest in the physics of laser technology so the field of laser surgery is interesting to me.   My experience with laser surgery goes back to the early 1990's when I had exposure to treating Port Wine Stains with the earliest models of the pulsed dye laser.  Through the years I have seen many types on non-invasive lasers be aggressively promoted and I have always tried to offer what I believed to offer the best results.
All of the laser treatments we perform require an office consultation so we can discuss the risk and benefits of the technology and carefully assess your complaints and the which laser is best for your complaints.
We have the following laser technologies in the office at the present time.

Fractionated CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing

Fractionated CO2 laser resurfacing is a less powerfull technique in wrinkle reduction with laser technology.  It was developed approximately 10 yeras ago.  It does not burn off the entire surface of the skin.  It burns pits into the skin to cause resurfacing.  It does not generate as much heat so it does not cause very much collagen tightening.  It does cause aesthetic improvement of the skin and it heals in 5 to 7 days which is half the time of the traditional CO2 technique.

Fractionated CO2 Laser Resurfacing uses the laser energy to burns a pattern of pits in the skin.
Since this is more of a deep laser peel that freshens the look of the skin, it is difficult to document improvement with pictures so I do not have before and after pictures for this laser treatment.

 Laser Tattoo Removal

Laser tattoo removal works by delivering laser energy to the dark pigment of the tattoo in the skin.  The laser generates energy that breaks up the pigment particles into very small particles.  These smaller particles can then be gobbled up by the infection fighting cells in the body and the pigment is slowly removed.  So the laser doesn't really remove the pigment itself, it prepares the pigment so the body can remove it by natural processes.  This is why it can take mant treatments 6 to 8 weeks apart to fade a tatto.  The best colors to remove are black, brown and red.  Colors that are almost impossible to remove are green, blue, yellow and purple.

 Laser Facial Vein Removal

We have a laser system that works well for those unsightly veins that occur around the base of the nose and on the nose.  This laser also works well for large broken capillaries on the cheeks.

Traditional CO2 Laser Resurfacing Is No Longer Offered

Traditional CO2 Laser Resurfacing uses the laser energy to cause a controlled burn of the skin.  It has two beneficial effects.  The first is that it burns off the surface wrinkles.  The second is that it causes tightening and contracting of the collagen fibers in the dermis.
The beneficial effect last for many years.
